Traded the boots for sailing shoes.

August 3, 2010

I became interested in sailing a few moons ago when I saw Turner on TV in Newport, RI, a wee bit tipsy bragging about his team’s chances of winning the World Cup. In those days TT was prone to getting a little liquored up and letting his mouth overload his ass. Since I enjoy all kinds of racing from horses to lawnmowers, I might like sail boats too. That following year I went up that way to see what its all about.

Rolled Into Newport for the annual sailing regatta around brunch time. A week out, this Summer social event of the season had the streets littered with crowds of golden folk. The overwhelming smell of money, old and new was all around. Lots of pearly white teethed people milling about, every kind of pretty was here on the East Coast of America.

Starved and road-weary, I needed some grub ASAP. A hot bath, a cold shower, clean sheets and a shave to settle in for some rest was next on the agenda. Found a little cafe tucked in on a side street off the main drag. I usually don’t go into places with “bistro” is in the name, but damn-it I was so hungry, I was going in. Certainly I looked a little ruff and tumbled after twelve hours on the road with a steel haus between my legs. The aromas wafting out of this place hit me between the eyes when a smile overtook this beat-up traveler. Smelled like all kinds of good.

Pale green sheets.

July 30, 2010

On soft clean green sheets, cool fresh air kissing our cheeks. Smirks of contented happiness. Sweet dreams on pale green sheets was these. With the arrival of spring we looked forward to bluer skies, blooming flowers and the feel of a lush green grass under our feet. Bringing new hopes with them sweet dreams on those sheets. Warmth of the Sun through the windows, outside cold air calls. Feelings of restlessness and excitement filled us with the coming of spring. Bright colors around the corner. Bird songs in the air.

Sitting around a campfire one night.

July 29, 2010

While traveling the Globe I run across items that are interesting and on occasion will tell the friends and neighbors about them. (here is one) The product listed herein is “Officially Endorsed by Juan Corbett.” Designed by Haneyart. You may find this item, with others at the Juan Corbett online Store linked here.

People often ask us (Haneyart), how did this or that design come about. This particular graphic came to be from a tongue and check response to an evening of drink’n and think’n. A few of us were sitting around a campfire solving the ills of the World when the topic of self protection came up. No, not condoms or birth control. (ha-ha.) Talking about firearms as protection. Booze and guns do not mix — use each with extreme caution, and never together!!! Booze and sex, thats another story all together, can be dangerous as well.

What if some one broke into your home? Your car broke down, you were stranded in a questionable neighborhood. There are bad people watching you from the shadows? Your enjoying a quite weekend camping when a maniac comes into camp. What could a person do to protect themselves or their loved ones if they found their-selves in a dangerous situation?

Maria of Mar del Plata.

July 27, 2010

I sailed into the Mar del Plata harbor for the Christmas holidays. Argentina is a country I love to visit for its culture, the courtesy to even strangers. A vast country, impressive and appealing, from seaside resorts, island hideaways to snow capped mountains, something for everyone. I can appreciate a country progressive enough to elect that Cristina Kirchner as their first female President.

The Porteños of Buenos Aires are great, but, for me the smaller port cities are where I’m most comfortable. This is where I first met her, “Maria of Mar del Plata.” Do you remember that song “My Maria?” Written by B.W. Stevenson and Daniel Moore, 1973, released again on the airwaves by Brooks and Dunn, 1996. I originally heard the song long before I met her.

Crazy thing happened on the boat ride to Argentina this time, the song came on the radio. I met my Maria on that visit. As always when I’m down this way, I enjoyed lots of prime beef, seafood and tried to tango.
